Personal Development

Intent

At The Sky Academy, Personal Development is a core driver of our vision and an essential element of our ambition for every student. Our curriculum is inclusive and intentionally designed to meet the diverse needs of all learners, particularly those with SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs, SLCN (Speech, Language, and Communication Needs), and students from disadvantaged backgrounds. We are ambitious for every young person, ensuring that no barrier limits personal growth, wellbeing, or future opportunities.

Our intent is to deliver a holistic, well-structured, and seamlessly embedded Personal Development programme that equips students with character, resilience, and the life skills needed to thrive both in education and in the wider world. We aim to foster confidence, independence, and self-belief, promote emotional wellbeing and physical safety, and instil a strong sense of community, understanding, and respect for diversity.

In an SEMH / SLCN setting such as ours, Personal Development is not just a curriculum area – it is a foundation for learning, wellbeing, and long-term success. While taught discretely, its principles are intentionally woven through every aspect of school life: our teaching, pastoral systems, therapeutic approaches, enrichment activities, and day-to-day interactions. Every lesson, conversation, and experience is an opportunity to nurture self-awareness, emotional regulation, social understanding, and positive relationships. Through this whole-school ethos, we empower students to grow into capable, confident, and responsible individuals prepared for the opportunities and challenges of adulthood.

Aligned with the PSHE Association, our Personal Development curriculum is delivered through a carefully sequenced spiral model that builds on prior learning. Dedicated weekly time ensures students can explore, revisit, reflect on, and deepen key themes, enabling secure understanding and meaningful progression over time. We recognise that content alone is not enough. Our approach, therefore, provides structured opportunities for students to explore values, attitudes, and beliefs through open discussion and guided reflection, allowing space to confidently develop practical skills and strategies for managing real-life situations.

We have carefully considered the specific needs and lived experiences of our learners, ensuring that our curriculum is not only relevant but transformative – preparing students for the complex social realities young people face today. In keeping with the Cabot Learning Federation’s commitment to inclusive excellence and high expectations, our commitment to Personal Development focuses on removing barriers to learning and ensuring that all students have the opportunities, support, and resources needed to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. We remain unwaveringly aspirational for every student, supporting them to recognise their potential and achieve it.

Implementation

At The Sky Academy, we use the PSHE Association’s accredited scheme of work to ensure our PSHE and wider Personal Development curriculum is high-quality, structured, and fully aligned with national standards. Covering health and wellbeing, relationships, and living in the wider world, the scheme provides a comprehensive, age-appropriate, and sequential framework that ensures consistency and progression across year groups.

The built‑in flexibility of the programme enables us to adapt and personalise learning meaningfully for our SEMH and SLCN learners. This ensures that our Personal Development offer is aspirational, inclusive, and equips all students with the essential knowledge, practical skills, confidence, and understanding they need to navigate adolescence and lead successful, fulfilling lives beyond school.

The implementation of Personal Development at The Sky Academy is aspirational and embedded across all aspects of school life. We follow a whole-school approach that goes beyond discrete lessons, ensuring that teaching is responsive to the complex SEMH and SLCN needs of our students. Our school values – Respect, Resilience, Belonging, and Ambition – underpin daily routines and interactions, reinforcing positive behaviours, emotional regulation, and respectful relationships.

We enhance our curriculum through the PSHE Association scheme, ensuring high-quality and age-appropriate content. In Lower School, PSHE is delivered by Key Workers who provide consistency and strong relationships; in Upper School, a subject specialist leads PSHE teaching to ensure depth and expertise.

Personal Development is taught through a rich combination of:

  • discrete PSHE lessons
  • cross-curricular links
  • assemblies
  • enrichment opportunities
  • educational visits
  • external visitors who enhance and contextualise learning

This ensures that students revisit key concepts in meaningful, real-world contexts, and develop secure understanding over time.

Through this integrated, adaptive approach, every student – regardless of background, starting point, or level of need – receives a coherent, inclusive, and impactful Personal Development curriculum. Our programme equips students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to thrive both within school and in the wider world.

Impact

At The Sky Academy, Personal Development is achieved through a coordinated, whole-school approach that ensures every student receives consistent, meaningful, and impactful support. We monitor core indicators: behaviour, attendance, engagement, safeguarding trends, pastoral records – which track progress in emotional regulation, resilience, and social communication – and targeted interventions to ensure we are meeting the complex SEMH and SLCN needs of our learners while preparing them for life beyond school.

How We Achieve Personal Development at The Sky Academy

Dedicated Curriculum:

Personal Development is delivered as a discrete, well‑structured subject encompassing PSHE, RSE, careers education, and wellbeing. Lessons are carefully planned to ensure progression, relevance, and comprehensive coverage, enabling students to build essential knowledge and skills over time.

Observations, learning walks, and work scrutiny help us evaluate how students apply key skills – such as communication, teamwork, problem solving, and self-management – across the curriculum.

Embedded Across All Learning:

The principles of Personal Development are woven throughout the wider curriculum. Teachers consistently model core behaviours—such as resilience, independence, and respect—ensuring that these values are reinforced in every subject and learning environment.

Pastoral Support:

A strong, responsive pastoral system underpins our offer. Students receive daily emotional and social support through mentoring, therapeutic interventions, and restorative practices. This ensures that SEMH needs are effectively met so students can engage positively with learning.

Enrichment and Cultural Capital:

A rich programme of trips, workshops, and extracurricular activities broadens students’ experiences, builds confidence and teamwork, and deepens cultural awareness. These experiences help students understand the world around them and strengthen essential social and personal skills.

Student Voice and Leadership:

We provide structured opportunities for students to take responsibility and develop leadership skills. Existing roles include peer mentoring, and we are committed to introducing a student council and expanding opportunities for community-based projects. These initiatives help us evidence cultural capital development and the application of personal development skills beyond the classroom.

Surveys, discussion groups, daily check-ins, and informal feedback provide valuable insight into students’ confidence, wellbeing, sense of belonging, and feelings of safety.

Safeguarding and Wellbeing Initiatives:

Regular sessions on online safety, mental health strategies, and healthy lifestyles are delivered through assemblies, tutor time, cross-curricular work, and targeted intervention. These sessions ensure all students have the knowledge and strategies needed to stay safe and manage their wellbeing.
The Sky Academy also uses secure filtering and SENSO IT monitoring to ensure safe and appropriate IT use.

Careers and Future Pathways:

We provide a comprehensive careers programme that includes impartial guidance, employer encounters, and personalised transition planning. Subject to risk assessments, we aim for every Year 11 student to have the opportunity to participate in work experience. These experiences prepare students for their next steps in education, training, or employment.

Longer-term impact is measured through careers guidance outcomes and destination data, demonstrating how well we prepare our students for life beyond school.

Collectively, this evidence demonstrates that our Personal Development programme enables students to leave The Sky Academy as capable, confident, and responsible young people who are prepared for their futures academically, socially, and emotionally.
