Food Technology

Intent

At The Sky Academy, the intent of the Food Technology curriculum is to ensure that all pupils develop the essential practical cooking skills, nutritional knowledge, and confidence required to make informed, healthy food choices now and in the future. We aim to empower pupils with a secure understanding of what constitutes a balanced diet and why nutrition plays a vital role in physical health, mental wellbeing, and long-term lifestyle choices.

Our curriculum is deliberately designed to build strong foundations in core cooking skills, including food preparation, safe use of equipment, and basic cooking methods. Alongside this, pupils gain a clear understanding of key concepts such as the Eatwell Guide, nutrients and their functions, portion control, and the impact of food choices on health and the wider world.

Food Technology at The Sky Academy supports personal development, independence, and life readiness. We intend for our pupils to leave with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to plan, prepare, and evaluate nutritious meals for themselves and others, regardless of background or prior experience.

Implementation

The Food Technology curriculum is structured to be progressiveinclusive, and skills focused, with learning building systematically across key stages.

  • Core practical skills are at the heart of every unit. Pupils are explicitly taught and repeatedly practise essential techniques such as chopping, peeling, measuring, weighing, mixing, baking, boiling, frying, and using the oven and hob safely.
  • Health, safety, and hygiene are embedded throughout all lessons to ensure pupils understand how to work responsibly in a kitchen environment.
  • Theoretical knowledge is carefully interwoven with practical lessons, ensuring pupils understand:
      • the components of a balanced diet
      • the role of macronutrients and micronutrients
      • the importance of hydration and fibre
      • how dietary needs vary across life stages and cultures
  • Pupils engage in meal planningevaluating outcomes, adapting recipes, and reflecting on their work using technical language, helping to deepen understanding and retention.
  • Lessons are scaffolded to support all learners, while challenging is provided through increased independence, more complex recipes, and evaluative tasks.
  • Cross-curricular links reinforce learning in sciencemathsPSHE, and literacy, supporting wider curriculum coherence.

Assessment is ongoing and purposeful, focusing on both practical competency and knowledge acquisition, and feedback is used to help pupils refine techniques and improve outcomes.

Impact

As a result of the Food Technology curriculum at The Sky Academy, pupils develop:

  • confidence and competence in cooking, with a secure grasp of essential techniques.
  • a strong understanding of balanced diets, nutrition, and healthy living.
  • the ability to plan and prepare nutritious meals independently.
  • increased independence, resilience, and problem-solving skills.
  • greater awareness of personal health, food choices and their wider impact.

By the end of their Food Technology journey, pupils are equipped with lifelong skills that support wellbeing, independence, and positive choices beyond school. The curriculum ensures that pupils are not only able to cook, but understand why healthy, balanced eating matters – preparing them for adulthood and aligning with The Sky Academy’s commitment to aspiration, inclusion, and real-world readiness.
