At The Sky Academy, our intent is to deliver a Maths curriculum that is accessible, meaningful, and ambitious for all learners. We aim to develop confident, resilient mathematicians who can apply mathematical thinking to real-life situations and future employment. Our curriculum is designed around closing gaps in prior learning, building secure foundational knowledge, and promoting a positive attitude towards maths in students who may have previously experienced challenge or disengagement. Our goal is to equip students with essential numeracy skills that improve independence, support emotional regulation through routine and structure, and prepare them for life beyond school.
Maths is taught in small, structured groups that provide a calm, predictable environment where SEMH needs are understood and supported. Staff use trauma-informed strategies and clear routines to help students build trust and manage anxiety around learning. Concepts are sequenced carefully, with explicit teaching, modelling, and plenty of guided practice to ensure security before moving on. Regular diagnostic assessments identify gaps in number, calculation, and problem solving, allowing teachers to tailor interventions and personalise pathways.
We encourage peer learning and group work, fostering social skills alongside mathematical understanding. By working collaboratively, students can share strategies and support one another, enriching the learning experience.
Lessons focus on developing core mathematical strands – number, geometry, ratio, algebra, statistics – while embedding functional application such as budgeting, time, measurement, and real-world problem solving. Vocabulary is explicitly taught to support students with speech, language, and communication needs. Concrete resources, visual models, and step-by-step scaffolding reduce cognitive load and support understanding.
Impact is measured through academic progress, increased confidence, and improved engagement with learning. Students make measurable gains in numeracy by closing gaps identified. This is evidenced through improved baseline scored, stronger problem-solving ability, and greater independence in mathematical tasks.
