Science

Intent

At The Sky Academy, the intent of the Science curriculum is to develop curiousconfidentand capable learners who understand the world around them and can apply scientific thinking to real-life contexts. Our curriculum is designed to ensure pupils build a secure understanding of key scientific concepts across biology, chemistry, and physics, whilst simultaneously developing the core scientific skills needed to enquire, investigate, and explain.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • develop strong foundational knowledge of essential scientific concepts
  • master core scientific skills, including observing, measuring, recording, analysing, and evaluating
  • use accurate scientific vocabulary to communicate ideas clearly
  • understand the relevance of science to everyday life, future learning, and possible careers

The Science curriculum supports The Sky Academy’s commitment to high aspirations, inclusivity, and preparing pupils to thrive in an increasingly scientific and technological world.

Implementation

The Science curriculum at The Sky Academy is carefully sequenced to ensure that both knowledge and skills build progressively over time. Key concepts are revisited and deepened, allowing pupils to make connections across different areas of science and retain learning securely.

  • Pupils study a broad and balanced curriculum across biology, chemistry, and physics, covering essential topis such as cells, forces, energy, materials, reactions, ecosystems, and electricity.
  • Core scientific skills are explicitly taught and embedded across all topics, including:
      • planning and carrying out investigations
      • using equipment safely and accurately
      • collecting, presenting, and interpreting data
      • drawing conclusions and evaluating evidence
  • Practical work forms a central part of learning, enabling pupils to develop confidence in working scientifically and understand how scientific knowledge is generated.
  • Scientific language and literacy are prioritised, with key terminology regularly modelled, practised, and applied in written and verbal explanations.
  • Lessons are designed to be inclusive and accessible, with appropriate scaffolding and challenge to ensure all pupils can succeed.
  • Assessment is ongoing and purposeful, focusing on both conceptual understanding and skill development, with feedback used to address misconceptions and strengthen understanding.

Cross-curricular links are made where appropriate, particularly with mathematicsliteracyand PSHE, reinforcing the application of science in wider contexts.

Impact

As a result of the Science curriculum at The Sky Academy, pupils:

  • develop a secure understanding of key scientific concepts across all disciplines.
  • demonstrate growing confidence and competence in scientific enquiry and practical work.
  • are able to think critically, ask questions, and justify ideas using evidence.
  • use scientific vocabulary accurately to explain processes and phenomena.
  • show increased engagement, curiosity, and resilience in problem solving.

By the time pupils complete their Science education at The Sky Academy, they are well prepared for further study and real-life application of science. They leave with not only strong, scientific knowledge, but also the skillsconfidenceand curiosity needed to understand the world and their place within it – supporting lifelong learning and informed decision making.
